When I packed my gear for Marianne and Thomas’ wedding at Val d Or, I went about my normal routine, checking and double-checking I had everything I needed. batteries, cameras, lenses, flashes and so on and so on. Then I did something different. I packed 3 extra shirts. It was 10.00am and outside, the mercury had just gone through 33 degrees. An hour later, as I reached the outskirts of Franschhoek, the temperature had rising to 39 degrees. Long story short? By 2.00pm we’d hit the 48 degree mark. 48 degrees! Do you have any idea just how hot that is when you’re holding a camera up to your face and trying to get a decent shot while the sweat rolls into your eyes? And then of course you need to keep the guests comfortable with the fact that they’re going to have to step out into the heat for a bit of Warren Williams wedding posing.Thomas even decided to postpone the ceremony by half an hour hoping that it would cool – just marginally. Fat chance! The blistering Franschhoek heat hung around and overstayed its welcome way too long. But even though people were slowly melting away and losing weight under the African sky, the good cheer (and everyone’s total preparedness to go toe-to-toe with me when it came to photographs) made it a fantastic affair all round! And one last thing. I seem to be picking up a lot of weddings where everyone speaks a different language from the next person. Greek, French, Italian, Dutch, English and Afrikaans are not uncommon at any given wedding anymore! At one stage at Marianne and Thomas’ wedding I started wondering why a group of people I was shooting weren’t reacting. Then it struck me – I was speaking Afrikaans, they were French.
