JJ, Corrien and Emma, Kraalbaai, West Coast, South Africa. There must be few places on earth quite as special as Kraalbaai. In April and May, it must come pretty close to what heaven might have to offer. Quiet solitude, thick, rolling mists that uplift the soul and bring a reflective peace. Then in the winter months it turns, putting on a cold, hard, rugged, barren and completely deserted face. Spring brings that well-known West Coast rebirth – waters so blue your eyes battle to comprehend it, fields of wildflowers, skies that offer a glimpse into eternity. Not your normal, everyday stuff. And then summer bursts in. Hot sands. Snakes, tortoises, swooping gulls, and holidaymakers. It’s a fine, fine place. God should seriously consider retiring there one day. JJ and Corrien whose wedding I shot know this. It’s a place that’s in their blood. And when it’s in your blood it’s really difficult to explain just how special Kraalbaai and Preekstoel are. Maybe that’s why they’re exposing little Emma to this ‘Gem of the Universe’ as much as they can. Then it’ll be in her blood too. And that’s probably one of the finest things a parent could ever do. Perfect. Just perfect.
