There was a moment at  Matthew and Nicole’s wedding at Silvermist Estate in Hout Bay where I thought I’d wandered into the Springbok Pub.
It was still early – probably 8.30-ish or so. I looked around me at the scene and suddenly felt a bit bewildered. Over at a table way on the right there was a drinking game going on. Loudly at that. I looked left. Some of the more senior guests were wearing these flower headband thingies (specially made for the occasion I might add) and climbing in on the act with shooters. It was chaos out there in the middle of the battlefield. There was an immense amount of chatter and laughter and hugging going on. Then Scott the MC called for order and started his speech. The room fell silent for a moment. But it was just for a moment because after that he brought the house down with perhaps the most brilliant speech in the history of weddings worldwide. Ever. The laughter got to weeping proportions at stages. I wasn’t sure why at the time, but he kept repeating certain words like: ‘love,’ ‘marriage,’ ‘Matthew and Nicole,’ ‘happiness,’ ‘kindness,’ ‘friendship.’ Turns out those words he repeated were all part of a drinking game he’d put together and every time he repeated a specific word, the table who had that word had to drink. Inventive stuff, especially during the speeches! Now that’s style I tell you. As for Matthew and Nicole, well, I’m just so incredibly lucky to have had them. McConks, you’re da maaaan! And um Nicole. Well, I think you’ll be seeing more of her and her bridesmaids shortly…
