Mike and Louise, Steenberg Estate. What a build up it had been. Torrential, driving, pouring rain in the few days before their wedding. And now, here I was, driving up to where Louise was getting ready at iKhaya Safari Lodge and Cape Town was blue, crisp and summery. Nothing could go wrong. Unless of course you were a mommy of an old oak tree on Rhodes Drive that decided it wanted to heave itself across the power lines and bring all electricity to a somewhat abrupt end. Which of course it did. As oak trees like to do on the most significant day of your life. But luckily, Mike, Louise’s husband-to-be is a startlingly fine engineer and with a bit of re-jigging had a generator up and running in no time (while Eskom bless their souls muddled about in the road outside). So I arrived to the peaceful strains of a generator and a hair-dryer doing their things. We were running somewhat behind time, but thanks to the magic of Carla Brown (you simply CANNOT underestimate the importance of a pro make-up artist), Louise’s make-up was on in record time and we were back on track.
