5.30am. Woodstock. I look over my shoulder nervously. Charles and Riana are from Port Elizabeth and I’m not sure they understand the neighbourhood we are about to wander into for Riana’s Trash the Dress. In a wedding dress nogal. I shot their wedding up at Slipperfields just outside of PE in April (yes, the wedding where I dropped 1 x Riana’s dress into a muddied field and almost ended my career). You can read about that little episode here. Anyway, that’s history, and now she was giving me permission to actually dirty here dress a bit. Lovely. Grime, graffiti and salt-of-the-eath characters are like a red flag to a bull to me, so off we went, happily doing our thing. Then we found this image of Madiba on a steel, rolling gate. We all went silent for a moment (Madib’s had just passed away). ‘Let’s do it’ I said: ‘this is for Madib’s.’ Goosebumps ran down my arms and I’m sure it did for Charles and Riana too. It was an awesome 2 hours and the folk on their way to work all laughed and cheered us on, some even posing with Riana for photographs. Although, that said, we did stumble upon one very grumpy old aunty who had a serious problem with us shooting outside her cafe, but it didn’t really stop us now did it. Life is too short to be grumpy my dear so be happy while you’re living for you’re a long time dead.
I could have carried on shooting these guys all day because they are indeed the kind of people that just make me so happy to have a camera in my hand. Now chaps, listen, you have until sort of August or so to fall pregnant, because really, a December pregnancy shoot might be a very fine idea. I’ll start scouting for locations…
JUST LOVE IT WARREN!!!!!! GORGEOUSNESS!!!! where was this taken?? love the location
